Mentoring for Women in STEM in Toronto

Toronto is Canada's largest tech and innovation hub. You have Google, Shopify, Uber, and hundreds of startups calling this city home. You have world-class hospitals doing cutting edge research. You have engineering firms building the future of transit and infrastructure. For women in STEM, the opportunities here are massive.

But here is what we hear from women across the GTA. The opportunities exist, but the path is not always clear. Who do you talk to when you want to switch from a traditional engineering role into product management? How do you find someone who can introduce you to the right people at a company you want to work at? Who helps you figure out whether to stay in your current job or take a risk on something new?

That is exactly why MakePossible exists. We are a mentoring network built for women in STEM, by women in STEM. And we have a strong and growing community right here in Toronto. Our members work at the big tech companies, lead labs at U of T and TMU, run their own consulting firms, and manage teams at major banks and insurance companies. They have been where you are. And they want to help.

Maybe you are a recent graduate from U of T or York with a degree in computer science or engineering. You have the grades and the skills, but you are struggling to get past the first round of interviews. A mentor can look at your resume, do a mock interview with you, and introduce you to hiring managers in their network. That kind of help can shave months off your job search.

Or maybe you have been working as a software developer for a few years. You are good at your job, but you feel like you are invisible. You want to be considered for leadership roles, but no one seems to notice you. A mentor who has navigated that transition can give you practical advice. How to speak up in meetings. How to build visibility. How to advocate for yourself without feeling like you are bragging.

We also know that Toronto is a city of newcomers. More than half of the people in this city were born somewhere else. If you are an immigrant woman in STEM, you face extra challenges. Getting your credentials recognized. Building a professional network from scratch. Learning how workplace culture works here. Our community has mentors who have walked that exact path. They understand what you are going through because they went through it too.

And for those of you who are already established in your careers. Maybe you are a senior engineer, a team lead, or a department head. You have so much to offer. Your experience, your connections, your hard-won lessons. Becoming a mentor is a way to give back. And it is also a way to grow. Many of our mentors tell us that they learn just as much from their mentees as they teach.

The best part about MakePossible is how simple it is to get started. You join the community. You fill out a quick profile. You tell us what you are looking for. Then we help match you with a mentor who fits your goals and your field. You can meet in person downtown, grab coffee in Mississauga or Scarborough, or connect over Zoom. Whatever works for your schedule.

Not ready to ask for a mentor? No worries. Come to our events. Join a mentoring circle. Just listen and learn. You will be surprised how much value you get just from being in the room with other women who understand your world.

Here is the truth. You do not have to figure this out alone. There are hundreds of women in Toronto right now who want to help you succeed. They have connections. They have advice. They have been exactly where you are today. They are waiting to meet you.

Join MakePossible today. Find your mentor. Grow your career. And when you are ready, become a mentor for someone else. That is how we change the face of STEM in Toronto. One conversation at a time.
